The Commodore 128 was released in 1985 as a compatible successor successor to the bestselling Commodore 64. It doubled the RAM to 128 KB and added a separate video output for 80-column text, which together was great for productivity software. It also shipped a more advanced Commodore BASIC 7.0. Commodore 64 compatability was achieved via a complete C64 ROM that could be booted by holding down the C= key. Despite the C128 selling well, there were always more C64 users, so most games were started in C64 mode. The Commodore 128 also has a C80 as a second processor for running CP/M applications.
I am currently using my Commodore 128 with a Comodore 64-era 1541 disk drive and the Commodore 1080 monitor from my Amiga. For tranferring data to the machine froma modern PC I use a ZoomFloppy and OpenCBM. For network connectivity I use the C64Net Wifi with firmware by Bo Zimmerman (host of the Central Texas Commodore Users Group) which extends the standard Hayes modem commands with internet-related commands. This allows even old programs designed for phone dialing to use Telnet and much more.
